Crate&Barrel aims to introduce an AI-powered chatbot that will act as a virtual interior design assistant.
-
Users of eCommerce websites for home goods often face challenges coordinating multiple products to create a cohesive design or style that complements their living spaces. Selecting products that harmonize in style, color, texture, and overall aesthetic can be fun but quickly become daunting, leading to frustration, dissatisfaction, decision paralysis, and potential abandonment of purchases.
-
A virtual interior design assistant chatbot will help users coordinate and select multiple products that complement each other, providing suggestions and visualizations to create a cohesive and visually appealing design for their living spaces and aid in decision fatigue.

Iterative Design
Wireframes and low-fidelity prototypes were tested, with revisions made after each test.
Three critical moments in the user experience were identified for testing implementation.
-
After user testing, Crate&Barrel’s AI-powered chatbot was designed with four main categories—inspiration, room-specific advice, curated lookbooks, and booking an appointment—each strategically named and ordered to enhance the user experience.
-
Through thorough user testing, the chatbot also features sub-category prompts with optimized ordering for each of the eight main rooms in the home—living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, home office, entryway, and outdoor spaces—providing tailored design suggestions that cater to specific user needs.
-
Image Upload Feature: To enhance the design process, users can upload images directly into the chat, allowing the AI to offer more accurate recommendations based on their existing spaces, style, furniture, and decor.
Final Design
The final design helps direct users to the content they’re looking for.
-
Updates to category naming and ordering helped users make decisions faster.
-
Additional prompts were added to encourage users to upload images and guide them toward final recommendations.
-
A back button was added in addition to the chips to help guide users back to the main four buckets.
UI buttons were added to the personalized mood board, room inspiration and product suggestions.
